  • Packs For Hunger Receives $20,000 Donation From XTO Energy

XTO-NMOGA.png XTO Energy Inc., a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil Corporation, is supporting hunger relief in Carlsbad and Loving area with a generous $20,000 donation to the Carlsbad Community Foundation that will be designated to Packs for Hunger, Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway has announced.

"With so many lives upended due to the COVID-19 crisis, the need has never been greater for local organizations such as Packs for Hunger who are committed to feeding our children," Mayor Janway stated. "Thank you to XTO Energy for once again displaying a long-term commitment to this community and its residents."

In addition to its donation to Packs for Hunger, XTO Energy has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by contributing $100,000 to Carlsbad Municipal School District to help facilitate the transition from classroom learning to online remote learning and has paid for personal protection equipment for Carlsbad Fire Department.

Packs for Hunger usually provides a backpack filled with pantry food items for area students, but with school closures in New Mexico, job disruptions, and health risks, reliance on the backpack program has increased significantly. Packs for Hunger is now feeding 196 families each week in both Carlsbad and Loving by working with the school districts to determine families in need and are expecting the volume to grow as summer approaches.

As a result of the increase, Packs for Hunger has restructured and is distributing food boxes to support families each week with food items such as beans, pasta, nuts, and other non-perishable items. The weight on each box is 20-25 pounds of food per week.

Packs for Hunger's annual March fundraiser, the "Mayor's Shindig," was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns and precautions, making the need for financial support during this critical time even greater.

"This donation provided by XTO will boost our efforts of serving families faster because our program does not require a cumbersome application process for families to prove need," said Packs for Hunger Program Director Carol Worley. "We are very blessed with caring corporate neighbors like XTO Energy to help us to feed families in our area," added Carol. "At Packs for Hunger, believe if we can change the life of one child, how many lives will that one child change?"
